What AutoQA cannot do - even if the models get better

A better model still can't settle a claim the record or the written instructions leave open. It only changes how often a search misses a planted defect, and how often a check for "nothing is missing" is wrong. Measure both again for each setup.

Status Limits analysisUpdated 2026-07-23

AutoQA can't settle a review claim that the record and the written instructions leave open. Some limits hold at every model generation, and others move with each model and must be measured per instrument.

A third kind is about authority, since checking a claim doesn't grant the right to act on it. Use the eight-item checklist to test whether a deployment has gone past them.

Three ceilings. Permanent limits come from the record and the task. Generation-relative limits have to be measured again for each setup. Authorization means a capability is not a license to punish.

Purpose

Each limit gives its grounds, what it does not imply, and the signature of operating past it.

The verification model these limits apply to

AutoQA, in any implementation, computes a relation between a reviewer claim q, a governing contract C (the written instructions), and a bounded record R (what the reviewer could see). The possible honest outputs are: supported, contradicted, insufficient (the record does not decide), and contract-ambiguous (the instructions do not decide). Everything below is a statement about what this computation can and cannot establish. A system that emits only pass/fail has not escaped these limits; it has hidden the third and fourth outcomes inside the first two.

What remains inside the limits

The limits above leave a large, valuable, defensible operating region:

  • Local grounding claims with span-shaped truth-makers: the core lane, measurably strong when evidence is in view (~85 F1 in the December 2025 grounded-entailment regime [GF-07]).
  • Transcription and provenance: quotes, citations, offsets - deterministic, with recall 1.0 by construction over correctly parsed, in-scope inputs.
  • Deterministic computations: rating consistency, field completeness against enumerable checklists, uniformity signals - code, not judgment.
  • Instruction-defect detection: finding the cases the contract does not decide is both feasible and compounding in value (L2 worked for you).
  • Triage and evidence assembly: the assist gain is measured on current evidence - in the largest randomized deployment of gated model feedback on evaluative work (ICLR 2025, more than 20,000 reviews), 27% of reviewers revised after feedback [CM-05], and evidence-first presentation can reduce automation bias in assisted verification - a distinction the pilot tests rather than assumes [CM-03] - and it requires no authority the limits forbid.
  • Measurement of the human baseline itself: the system can price reviewer disagreement and decompose its causes - the thing no agreement score does.
