The AutoQA Kernel

pipeline/KERNEL-v0.1-superseded.md

Version 0.1 · 2026-07-15 · status: proposed, pending adversarial review

This document is the philosophical kernel of the AutoQA program: the minimal set of commitments from which everything else — the eleven principles, the eight-stage architecture, the decision policy, the governance rules — is built. It exists because the program will outlive every model generation it runs on, and therefore must rest only on what does not move.

Every statement in Parts I–II carries exactly one tag:

  • [TELOS] — the stipulated purpose. One statement. Everything serves it.
  • [DEF] — a definition. Definitions are not true or false; they are commitments to use words one way, chosen so that the telos is expressible.
  • [FACT] — a permanent constraint: a property of information, computation, statistics, incentives, or institutional reality that no capability improvement removes. Facts are stated as narrowly as their grounds support.
  • [CHOSEN] — a normative commitment. Not derivable, and not pretended to be. Chosen means defended, versioned, and ownable — the honest alternative to smuggling values in as if they were theorems.
  • [LAW] — an external legal given, binding where its scope conditions hold.

Part III contains only [DERIVED] statements — consequences of Parts I–II, each citing the kernel elements it follows from. Part IV declares [INTERFACE] slots — the places where measured, perishable facts are allowed to enter the system. Part V names [HOLE]s — questions the kernel deliberately cannot settle.

The kernel discipline: a design element is legitimate only if it is (a) derived from the kernel, (b) an operationalization filling a declared interface slot and carrying a measured-error obligation, or (c) an explicit kernel amendment, versioned like a constitution. Nothing else ships. When a future dispute arises, it is resolved by tracing to the kernel; if the trace fails both ways, the kernel is silent and must be amended explicitly rather than interpreted conveniently.
